What are head and neck cancers?

Head and neck cancers encompass a variety of cancers, including cancers of the mouth, throat, larynx, sinuses, nasal cavity, and salivary glands. Most head and neck cancers originate in the squamous cells of mucosal surfaces in the head and neck.

What are the causes of head and neck cancers?

Head and neck cancers are caused by mutations that lead to uncontrolled cell growth. Alcohol and tobacco use, HPV infection, betel nut ingestion, Epstein-Barr infection, and genetic disorders put a patient at risk for head and neck cancers.

What are the symptoms of head and neck cancers?

Symptoms of head and neck cancers include red or white patches in the mouth, jaw swelling or growths, bleeding and pain in the mouth, pain when swallowing, ear pain, ear ringing, trouble hearing, trouble in breathing and/or speaking, blocked sinuses, persistent sinus infections, headaches, nose bleeding, tooth pain, swelling in the eyes, paralysis and/or numbness in the face, and persistent pain in the face.

How are head and neck cancers treated?

Treatment for head and neck cancers include chemotherapy, immunotherapy, or radiation therapy.
